University of Portsmouth Combined Sailing Club
Latest news: UPSCS is the new name for what was originally the University Sailing club (UPSC) and the Offshore Sailing Club (UPOSC). The two clubs merged in September 2008 to create a new, much larger club, the aim of which is to promote all types of sailing to a greater number of people. By working together as one club, we will benefit from a bigger athletic union budget, better combined resources, a greater pool of sailors from which teams can be selected, and a much more active social scene. Members of the club will be free to utilise both former clubs’ assets and facilities, including the Royal Naval Sailing Center, Sunsail charters and RYA courses at heavily discounted prices, as well as the club’s fleet of dinghies and RIB.
Here to help keep all the members of the club up to speed on current events, it is also a good source of information when trying to find out what we are all about before joining. Whether you are a prospective student at the university of Portsmouth or an existing one, a world class sailor or a complete and utter beginner who doesn't know his jib from his gybe, there's something here for you all.
If you think the club's all sail, sail, sail, then take a good look around this site to see that it definitely isn't! We enjoy some of the best social events out of all the university's clubs, with twice-weekly social meetings at our local pub and sailing club to keep up to scratch on things and monthly "do's" which definitely have nothing to do with sailing!
Getting in contact with us is not at all difficult. You can either use the details from the contacts page, turn up at one of our socials (details on the forum) or just look-out for people wearing sailing club T-shirts!

BUSASPortsmouth University sailing club had their hard work rewarded last week when they came 3rd in the British University Sailing Association Yachting Nationals. The week consisted of 8 races, with one race taking 6 hours starting at Spitbank fort, going down to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, and then returning downwind to the fort. Both Teams entered the competition with high spirits, Portsmouth White having won the ‘Sunsail Chiller Day’ Competition just days before, and Portsmouth Blue having a string of regatta victories under their belt. Portsmouth’s advantage of sailing in familiar waters soon became clear, as the battle for podium places was narrowed down to only a few candidates. Both teams were able to achieve consistency in their results, keeping them high in the rankings, with both teams being in the top ten by the close of the first day. The six hour race, however, was where Portsmouth’s sailors were able to demonstrate their acute local knowledge of tides and wind patterns, allowing Portsmouth White to storm through the fleet and achieve a second place. Tension was high on the last day of racing as Portsmouth White started the day at the top of the leader-board, but an unlucky day meant that their dreams of the National Trophy faded, and the team shifted down to third place. This bad luck was not echoed in Portsmouth Blue however, who won the final race of the week, putting them in 9th place overall. The week was a demonstration of the high standard of sailing found amongst students, and was supported by the Royal Yachting Association, who provided top coaches for the week, giving both advice on the water and a video debrief each day. Despite coming third, the British University Sailing Association have stated that Portsmouth White are “The team to watch out for next year!” and thanks to the Athletic Union and the Sailing Club’s committee, the club is well on the way to achieving that national championship crown next year! It is going to be £35 for the day including transport from Gunwharf to Haslar marina. The rib will be leaving Gunwharf at 0915 so please be there at 0910 at the latest. The recent purple wednesday artical!!( old news now)Sailing Club 1st Team Storm BUSA!! After a seasons worth of training, and various events all over the country from Exeter to Glasgow, fighting off stiff completion from numerous other sailing universities, Portsmouth First team, made it to the prestigious BUSA Team Racing Finals. The event hosted by Oxford Uni sailing club at Farmoore reservoir over the Easter break, consisted of three days worth of round robyns sailing with competitors taking part in over 28o races. 38 teams qualified to the finals out of just under 80. The weather caused problems with a severe lack of wind on the first two days testing all the teams skills. Portsmouth sailed through it and gained a top place in the gold league. The wind changed on the third day drastically, and the reservoir from dead calm to very windy, with winds predicted between 30 - 40 knots, on the edge of team racing conditions. The day saw some extreme sailing from the Portsmouth team, by lunchtime Portsmouth had made it through to the quarter finals and won there first race against Bristol, at this point the wind strengthened and all teams where called in off the water for their own safety. Unfortunately no more races could take place, due to the massive weather front, so the quarter, semi and finals where worked out on points, sadly meaning that’s the 1st achievable dream of third, and potentially higher could not become reality. Six unhappy sailors left the event, however all then realised the actual achievement, the team had come 7th at BUSA, out of 75 teams, at a university that doesn’t even sail the boats they race in and gained 11 BUSA points for the AU.
